Questioning: What is Your Typical Wait Time?
Studies show that the typical wait time for teachers after posing a question is less than one second. Or course, most of us would agree that even one or two seconds does not allow much time to think about and make sense of a question let alone formulate a response. If you are curious about your typical wait time, why not invite a colleague who is willing to time your wait time for you? Ask him or her to visit either during the first ten or last ten minutes of class to time your wait time for whole class questions; or to drop in for 15 minutes during the middle of class when you are monitoring study teams as they work.
In analyzing data on your wait time keep the following ideas in mind: assessing questions may not need as much wait time as advancing questions, asking a question and then walking away from a team ensures a built-in, longer wait time; but do not forget to tell teams you will go to one more team and then come back to them in order to ensure that your wait time is not too long for the question to lose its meaning.
