Notice and Wonder

Karen Wootton, Odenton, MD karenwootton@cpm.org

Show your students the image and ask them What do you notice? What do you wonder? Can they make sense of what they are seeing? This large ball of twine sits in Darwin, MN. The diameter of this ball is 12 feet. What do you think this ball of twine weighs? How long would it take to roll this ball of twine? This ball was created by one person, Frances A. Johnson, who in 1950 started rolling the ball of twine. Every single day he spent four hours, every day, to create this. How long did it take? It is debated as to whether or not this is the largest ball of twine as there are three other contenders out there.
