Seventh-grade students standing at Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces (VNPSs), working collaboratively on percent error tasks, exhibiting puzzlement yet persevering, is what was taking place in my classroom on an early spring day.
This school year, teachers throughout the country are implementing CPM’s new curriculum Inspiring Connections.
As a Professional Learning Specialist, I have had more than 80 individual implementation support meetings with teachers and 20 team meetings this fall. When I ask teachers to reflect on their biggest challenge this year, the overwhelming response is collaboration.
As a CPM math teacher and tutor, I can instantly spot a student who has been taught with the CPM curriculum.
We have all been there: as students read through the next math problem someone will raise their hand and say, “This problem is crazy, why would anyone do this? Can’t they just Google it?”
Students are expected and encouraged to struggle productively in mathematics.
