Differentiate the Question, Not the Task

All students deserve to experience cognitively demanding tasks. Participants will explore how to build students’ mathematical understanding, increase their confidence, and support their mathematical identities as doers of mathematics in shared tasks. Join us in exploring how to differentiate questions to support productive struggle while maintaining the rigor of a rich task.

How to Build a Community of Mathematical Thinkers in the Classroom

As educators, we want students to collaborate and engage deeply with mathematical thinking. For true thinking to occur, students must communicate their ideas and reasoning with one another. However, motivating students to work productively with their teams can be a challenge.
In this session, participants will explore how to build student thinking by intentionally building student status—a key component in developing equitable and engaged mathematical communities. You’ll experience strategies that help raise the status of all learners, motivate collaboration, and strengthen classroom culture. Come ready to participate, reflect, and leave with actionable ideas to elevate every student’s voice in your classroom.

What Counts as Counting?

In the popular imagination, counting is 1,2,3. As educators, we know learning to count draws on language, literacy, and numeracy. Continued counting development is necessary to support algebra learning. Let’s take that journey from 1,2,3 to 2n + 1.

There Is No BTC Without the T: Assigning Problems That Build Thinkers

A Thinking Classroom isn’t built by whiteboards alone, it’s built through the thinking that happens at them. In this interactive workshop, explore the reasoning that emerges from rich problems, learn how to transform traditional practice into meaningful thinking problems, and learn how to design your own activities that spark deep mathematical understanding.
