At Home

Using a Parent Guide at Home

A Parent Guide is designed to sit alongside your studentโ€™s classwork, not replace it. Its explanations may present an idea differently from the way it was introduced in class, which can help when something has not clicked yet.

A Simple Routine

Start with what your student is working on now

Ask which chapter or section their class is on and download that part. A single chapter is quicker to open and print than the complete guide.

Talk through the explanation and examples together

Read an example side by side and ask your student how it compares with the way their team approached a similar problem in class.

Try the practice problems, then check the solutions

When an answer does not match, look back at the example before moving on. Spotting where the thinking changed is part of the learning.

Complete Guide, Chapter, or Section

  • Download the complete guide to keep the whole course in one file.
  • Download a single chapter when you only need the topic your student is working on now.
  • Core Connections Integrated II is published section by section, so choose the section number your student is working on, or download the complete guide.
  • Core Connections Integrated I does not have a complete guide file, so download that course by chapter.
  • Core Connections Algebra is also available in Spanish, as a complete guide or by chapter.

More Ways to Support Your Student

Parent Guides are one of several free resources for families. Your studentโ€™s teacher is always a good place to start, and when a question goes beyond a single topic, these pages can help.

Tell Us What You Think

Your feedback shapes what goes on these pages. For questions about a specific assignment or class, your studentโ€™s teacher is still the best person to ask.

    Quick Reference

    CPM Words, Explained

    Study team

Two to four students who work together every day. Each has an assigned role, and they change teams often.

    Review & Preview

The homework in Core Connections. It mixes in older topics on purpose, so it will not always match the dayโ€™s lesson.

    Reflection & Practice

The same thing as Review & Preview, but in Inspiring Connections.

    Checkpoint

A marked skill check in the book, with worked examples and answers, so a student can test what they actually know.

    Math Notes

The boxes with the definitions and formulas. They appear after students have worked with an idea, not before.

    Methods & Meanings

The newer name for Math Notes. Same thing.

    Toolkit

A notebook a student builds through the course, with their notes, examples, and diagrams in one place.

    Mathematicianโ€™s Notebook

The Inspiring Connections version of the Toolkit.

    Parent Guide

Worked examples for specific homework problems. Find it in the eBook under Reference, then Student Support.

    Guided Skill Supports

Extra practice organized by chapter, for Core Connections courses.

    Skill Builders

Extra practice organized by topic, for Inspiring Connections courses.

    Tools and Topics

A letter home for each chapter, explaining what the chapter covers and what to try at home.

    Rough Draft Talk

Sharing an unfinished idea out loud without being marked wrong for it. It is meant to lower the stakes.

    Team Challenge

A test taken together as a team, usually before the individual test.

    Whiteboards on the wall

Students working standing up at vertical surfaces. It makes thinking visible and easier to revise.
